Modafinil

Modafinil', 'provigil', 179, 1, '

Modafinil is approved by the United States'' Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of narcolepsy and excessive daytime sleepiness. Off label, modafinil is used to treat attention deficit syndrome, depression, and lethargy.  In the real world, modafinil and armodafinil, the levo version of modafinil, are the drugs of choice for today''s top students and executives.

\r\n

As a drug, modafinil is classified as a α-Adrenergic agonist.  It is a Scedule IV Drug with little abuse potential and an ability to counter mental lethargy.

\r\n

Modafinil inhibits the reuptake of noradrenaline by the noradrenergic terminals on sleep-promoting neurons of ventrolateral preoptic nucleus

\r\n

Modafinil does not cause any peripheral sympathetic stimulation. Its CNS action is poorly understood but a few things seem clear.

\r\n

Modafinil induces wakefulness in part by its action in the anterior hypothlamus. Its dopeamine-releasing action occurs in the nucleus accumbens involving central alpha 1-adrenergic receptors. Modafinil is also known for its ability to increase excitatory, glutamate transmissions.

\r\n

Modafinil has been shown to prolong exercise time before exhaustion while performing at 85% of VO2max.  It also reduces the perception of effort required to maintain this threshold These drugs are banned by the doping agencies for the unfair advantage they provide..

\r\n

Modafinil was originally developed in France by neurophysiologist Michel Jouvet and the Louis Lafon Laboratories he worked for. They were bought out by American distributor, Cephalon, which was aquired by Teva Pharmaceuticals, which now own holdsits rights.

\r\n

Modafinil is a metabolite of adrafinil, its pharmacological uncle.

\r\n

Adrafinil is not available as a prescription drug in the US.  Both of these drugs were tested in the 1980''s as a treatment for narcolepsy. A longer-acting formulation of modafinil called armodafinil (Nuvigil) is also available.

\r\n

Since it launched, modafinil has been used by night shift workers, international travelers and others to restore order to their lives. Stay awake when needed and sleep when possible. It also has a reputation of improving cognitive function.

\r\n

Modafini provides increased alertness.

\r\n

It''s side effect includes irritability, edginess and weight loss, symptoms similar to those of amphetamines and related sympathomimetic amines.
Since the long-term effects can not be known, there is doubt as to its safety.

\r\n

Modafinil is today''s smart drug. Its ability to improve attention span allows users to retain more.

\r\n

Modafina has the ability to improve attention span and focus. Modafinil does so by increasing blood dopamine levels.

\r\n

Higher dopamine levels leads to an increased feeling of well being.  This and a more focused attitude has led to modafinil’s wide acceptance among college students and academic institution and universal recognition among the nootropic folk.

\r\n

Annual sales of Provigil  exceeds a billion dollars. Silicon valley is awash in it. The longer-acting formulation of modafinil called armodafinil (Nuvig) removes the inactive or dextro version of modafinil

\r\n

Since it launched, modafinil has brought night shift workers and international travelers, normalcy. They stayed awake when they needed to and found sleep when possible. It also has a neat side effect of improving cognitive function. Now, high-powered people use it to function on less sleep and find time for brilliant insights and bursts of creativity.

\r\n

Modafinil iives up to its promise of increased alertness but does have other undesirable side effects. These include irritability, edginess and weight loss, symptoms similar to those of amphetamines and related sympathomimetic amines.  Since the long-term effects can not be known, its safety gan not be assured.
