The Food and Drug Administration approved Qsymia on July 17, 2012 as a weight loss drug. Keeping with the pharmaceutical pattern of recyling drugs, Qsymia is actually nota new drug but instead is two older drugs that have lost patent protection: topiramate and phentermine.

Topiramate is an anticonvulsant and makes people feel full after eating. Phentermine suppresses appetite and has long been in use for short-term weight loss.
