Food is Medicine

Although they had an erratic supply, our ancestors ate pretty healthy foods.

All were in the wild, grown organically, cage-fee. 

Because they were natural foods, they experienced less allergies, sensitivities and cancers as a result.

 

They died young back then but not from the onslaught of immune disorders presently afflicting a great many Americans.

 

Life was brutal.

Food, hard to get.

 

Today, food is both plentiful and profitable.

Today, consumers are bombarded with suggestions to eat.

 

 

Before farming was invented, the hunters and gatherers were forced to live off the wild game and plants they caught and found.

Those foods were certainly healthier than ours.

This active lifestyle also produced a healthy response from the many peptides and neurotransmitters that regulate hunger.

 

There were no breads, legumes or rice. 

No dairy, cookies, muffins, chips, dips, sauces, gravy, and soft drinks either.

No obesity and probably very little diabetes as well.

 

Their bodies became acclimated to the choices of food available.

The body also developed a system to hold on to every calorie consumed, a feature that now plagues western society.

 

Before the 20th century there were no additives, preservatives or trans-fats in food.

No comfort food, no snacking.

 

Now in the 21st century all of our foods have them robbed of their treasure. Replaced with synthetic substitutes.

The rate of chronic disease is directly related to the amount humans consume.

They, not only are they missing the essential phytochemicals of the plant, but are simultaneously beinexposed and subjected to the human made, synthetic library of compounds.

 

It is this library that is responsible for the staggering increase in auto-immune diseases related to digestion as well other chronic diseases like fatigue and cancer.

 

Our ancestors were healthier and more active.

They used food to drive their metabolic engines not to satisfy their neuronal centers.

 

Today we have foods laced with addictives. 

 

I don't mean the preservatives and other additives they've been lacing our foods with for generations.

No, Im speaking of a new generation of molecules, addictive compounds that bind to receptors in the hypothalamus, the brain's reward or satiation center.

 

Obesogn is the term used to describe compounds that promote obesity.

Obesogens include salt, sugar and fat, compounds that target the reward center in the brain. Obesogens act at the neuronal level to instill addiction...

After years of debate, the list now includes fat and sugar.

There are others that mimic this activity. In the modern world, these addictives must be avoided.

But eating healthy foods alone won't make one healthy.

 

Good health is the residue of good fitness.

 

Fitness requires sound nutrition and regular, daily exercise.

Fitness means good health, which means long life for those who acquire it.

It's so simple.

A good diet is one that fuels exercise and provides the colorful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents needed to counter its physical stress. You can't have one without the other!

 

 

 Let food be thy medicine

The traditional healers of Greece, Rome and Asia share one common trait; they all focused on correcting imbalances in the body.

They each devised their own unique style of healing based on the environment and climate of their area.

The methods those healers used makeup the world's canon of natural therapies. Some of them have been completely discredited but others have stood the test of time.

They differ from what is recognized as modern, Western medicine by their flexibility and lack of science supporting their beliefs.

So instead of administering drugs to treat symptoms, the Ancients reversed imbalance by 'promoting' better balance from within. 

They reversed imbalances through the use of plants (herbal medicine), aromas (aromatherapy) or tiny needles inserted along specific meridians on the body (acupuncture). Other modalities of healing include the delivery of particles of electromagnetic waves (scalar) on chosen paths of the body, or a redirecting of energies through exercise or spiritual healing (yoga, religion). Other methods to reverse imbalance of which stress is a major contributor includes yoga and breathing exercises.

The concept of illness requiring corrective balancing forces is as old as human thought. 

Local plants, exercise and spiritual healing, mind exercises; all operate on regulating two opposing forces. 

The Ancients didn't know it but we do. The forces of illness are directed at cell membrane receptors and the molecules they interact with.

Intercepting attacks on receptors, prevents disease. The Ancients didn't need to battle the human created addictives but we do.

The binding of foods and their receptors is essential to good health. That binding takes place on cell membranes and enzymes.

On the other hand, receptors that become damaged from attack or toxic agents are recognized differently. For example, free radicals that damage lipoproteins will prevent their normal elimination from the body. Instead of being removed, the damaged lipoproteins (cholesterol) become the foci of inflammation, which ultimately develop into the chronic disease of atherosclerosis. Preventing the exposure of healthy cells to harmful agents must be the priority for a diet.

Furthermore, some of these forces which result in damage are normal everyday products. For example, the substitution of high fructose corn syrup for sugar in soft drinks, which began in the 1980’s causes overeating because fructose interferes with leptin and its normal binding to hunger receptors. The person goes through all the

Autoimmune diseases, coronary heart disease, cancer, arthritis, dementia, as well as the established connection to obesity and diabetes are thus explained as the result of an improper binding of cell receptors. The cellular benefit of exercise is based on the improved metabolism that accompanies it.

Exercise improves all molecular interactions by enhancing the the binding capacity of receptors.

Exercise shifts the gears of metabolism into overdrive. Exercise causes insulin activity to improve, enhances glucose-receptor binding, and mobilizes fats for metabolism.

On the other hand, sedentary inactivity causes membrane receptors to become desensitized to insulin causing cells to fail in transporting and metabolizing glucose properly and promotes fat deposition.

Exercise forces the creation of collateral blood supplies while inactivity promotes the deposition of plaque in blood vessels.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is the agency responsible for regulating the development, distribution, use and disposal of pesticides. The use of pesticides overfeeds Americans by dramatically increasing crop yields at the expense of natural events like insects, fungi and weeds.

These pesticides are chemicals that also bind with receptors, often initiating the disease process. Nature’s harmony is best supported when natural compounds bind to their respective receptors. Traditional healing is based on this harmony.  On the other hand, unhealthy food and drugs alter receptors causing addiction and illness.
